Lake Valley Camp Presentation..it's for the Teens YO!

A couple weeks ago my friend Jamie asked me to be part of a panel discussion on careers for their teens for Lake Valley Camp. (Which is a super cool organization by the way so check out the link.) So I whipped together this digital portfolio of my "regular" full time work, my freelance card design for RuvaCards, and my rubbishREMADE art/craft.

The other panelists came from totally different walks of life and everyone had a different story to tell. The teens were really nice, but pretty quiet overall. I imagine it's pretty overwhelming to hear all the information that was presented. It made me think back to the time I was that age and how much I really didn't know about what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, about going on to college and general adult stuff that wasn't really on my mind yet!

It turned out to be really fun experience and less nerve racking then I expected it to be. I've always been a bit shy of public speaking, but as I grow older and more knowledgeable and confident in my skills and abilities talking about stuff I actually do is really not all that bad at all. I'm out for now, but hope to be back sooner than a month!

Ideal Home Show - London

Well hello blog! It's been far to long. But I'm back now! I had an exciting opportunity to have my work used as an "accessory" in the Open Plan Living House for the Ideal Home Show @ Kings Court in London this March. I was contacted on February 12th and needed to get them a bowl by March 5th. So I made the bowl in the slideshow below. They were nice enough to send pictures of it in action in the kitchen of the show home. I cropped the photos they sent to focus on where the bowl was located, it's kind of in the background. But still pretty exciting! The woman I worked with was really excited and said they all loved the bowl. So YAY for rubbish! Other than this March has been kind of a bust for extra curricular creative activity. I hope to get a fresh start in April and to be a little more prolific with the blog posts. Thanks to those who occasionally check in on my less than fruitful blog. :D

Progress.

I've been quietly working on my new side project mentioned in the previous post but I've also had some time for making rubbish! Three new individual bowls (1, 2, 3), One Bowl Set and a lite beer blossom ornament.

ALSO worth mentioning if you're looking for some cool download-able Valentines go check out these bad boys I designed them for RUVA Cards. Free is good right?! Enjoy.

New Cake Stands in Shop

Hello! Quick etsy store update - just added 2 new cupcake stands this one and this one. The first cake stands that sold from the store ended up being used for a tea party themed baby shower. The buyer was kind enough to send me a few photos. I thought the spread looked really nice! To make the poms hanging above she followed this tutorial via Martha Stewart. The sign holders where from a DesignSponge tutorial. Many thanks to Liesel for sharing!

New Look!

As you can see things have changed a bit around here. I'm attempting to gather all of my "stuff" to one central area online. This blog is a transformation of that. What started as a place to post random design projects, ideas, sketches and generally keep myself creative has become my catchall for everything Jess Poisl related.

I will be updating the new Design Portfolio as quickly as possible, as of right now Logo Design is the only active part of my portfolio. This has been a long time coming. I've been talking about an online portfolio for ages. It's time.

You can also view my rubbishREMADE Etsy Shop here as well. Please join us on facebook for updates on products and general rubbish fun. This is another place I hope to be adding more new product to. Stay tuned for updates. New items in the shop will be posted on this blog and on the fb fan page as well.

And the Resume & Contact section is fairly self explanatory. This won't really change much - more informational than anything. So if you or anyone you know needs some design work, please email me!

And for a little eye candy here is a shot from our Happy Halloweenie Party. I was really excited about the centerpiece I threw together especially because it was made of rubbish! Thanks to mom and dad for the little pumpkins from their garden and to my friend Jamie for the inspiration to use old beer bottles as candle holders. Brilliant!

Much Belated Paper Bead Update

I was scrolling through some of my past posts and came upon the one about paper beads. I described the paper beads as being somewhat water repellent due to the clear acrylic coat I put on them. Well it turns out they are a bit more resilient than I anticipated!

This summer I made a simple paper bead bracelet for myself. I enjoyed it for about a month before accidentally leaving it in pocket. And as things go when one leaves things in pockets they end up taking a trip in the washing machine. After discovering what I had done to my bracelet I was pleased to see the bracelet was more or less intact. The beads seemed to have lost some of their pigment and were less shiny but overall the bracelet was still wearable. I probably should have tried to put another topcoat on the top after the washing machine incident but as it usually goes I forgot about it. Until my bracelet got washed a second time.

SHOOT!

That my friends is when the beads started to noticeably degrade, we experienced some major unraveling and the hemp became quite frayed. For as many times as I've washed and dried other things left in pockets - lip balm being the main culprit, which is a whole other can of worms - I never seem to learn my lesson. So ruined bracelets and oily spots on clothing still aren't enough to get me to remember to check my pants pockets before I chuck them into the laundry bin.

The pictures of my bracelet are pre-washing. I'll have to make another for this summer.

Bloomin' Days!

Well it has been quite a long time since I've posted. Not very good at this blogging thing. But I've been busy. I now have an etsy store rubbishREMADE. Woot! It's been keeping me busy even though I don't actually have a lot of product posted in there at the moment.

Some of my rubbish will make its way to Kenosha's Bloomin' Days, thanks to my friend Jen Moran. She is the owner of Greenola and Solidarity Clothing and has booth at Bloomin' Days and these lovely bowls and beads will be a few of the many awesome things featured there.

So if your in the K-town area June 6th check it out. Unfortunately I will be missing out on the Bloomin' Days fun due to a trip to Mexico. My friends getting married and I'm so excited. Puerto Penasco here I come!

Crafty

Ohh boy so a big epic fail on my part. I was totally into the whole blog thing for like a week and then I apparently got busy and stopped trying to output creative ideas on a consistent basis.

ANYwho... I've been busy with creative crafty things, just not design. I like to make things, I especially like to make things out of materials that might be considered garbage or something to throw away. Recycling/Upcycling whatever you want to call it - I'm all about it. It's become somewhat of an obsession of mine in the past year. I've come to the conclusion that I like handmade, usable art objects, and I like them to utilize materials that you have on hand.

So here are two examples of fun little holiday projects for friends. My beer cap ornaments and paper beads, made into bracelets. The beer cap ornaments were something I came up with last year. My sister recieved two of them for Christmas. A New Glarus, and a Leine's Red ornament I believe. I liked them so much I decided other people should get them this year as well, and I would like to have a few to adorn my tree as well.

The paper beads are not an original idea - I think I first heard about the idea on instructables.com from a threadbanger how to. Then I did more searching on the web and found a few different resources and saw some really neat stuff. Paper beads rock. I've coated mine with a clear acrylic so they should be somewhat impervious to water. I wouldn't submerge them or anything but if they get "splashed" on I think they'll hold up fairly well.

One last note: I'm totally against Christmas being out before Thanksgiving, or Halloween for that matter, especially in stores and on the radio - but when you handmake most of your presents you kind of need to plan ahead. I will probably be posting more artsy craftsy stuff for a bit here. I have plans for other handmade things so that, instead of sketching will be filling my time.

Peace!
